At the end of Season 3, the fate of The Charmed Ones was uncertain, with Phoebe in the Underworld and Prue and Piper gravely injured. How Phoebe returned to the mortal world is not immediately revealed, but Cole apparently helped her escape eventually and her sisters' fate is now known: Piper lives, healed by Leo, but Prue is dead as Leo apparently didn't return in time to save her.

As Piper and Phoebe struggle to come to terms with Prue's death, and having just discovered their long-lost sister Paige, so does the Source, who decides instead of killing her, to lure her to the side of Evil. At the same time, The Source attempts to destroy the charmed ones forever by blackmailing them. Meanwhile, Prue's spirit continues to walk among the living, who struggles to move on to the afterlife, but she soon finds help in an unexpected way.
